It almost pains me to share this little secret with the cyber folks but then I wouldn’t be doing my job in sharing all the wonderful places that make Barcelona special and so close to my heart. So here it goes…
This little café is unique because it is the only authentically Japanese pastry shop that exists in Barcelona. It’s master pastry king is Takashi who came to Catalunya in 1980 after studying in both Belgium and London as a pastry chef. Here, in his own little café he offers traditional Japanese sweets and chocolates along with some modern twists that better suit the Spanish palatte (like green tea magdalenas…mmm…). Ochiai is also the only place that I have successfully encountered green tea ice cream that you can buy in pints and take home. Their café offers many different types of pastries and some American coffee favorites like cappuchino with whipped cream that generally in Barcelona, is very hard to find outside of Starbucks. The last time that I went to Ochiai, there weren’t that many people either so the atmosphere was really tranquil and clean. Check it out if you happen to be in the Eixample area. It is hands down one of my favorite places in Barcelona.

Eat That Yellow Snow
Long before we heard of Sadaharu Aoki ( best Japanese pastry and chocolate shop in Paris - Michel ), there was a Japanese Pastry Chef in Barcelona, doing his thing and establishing himself as one of the best pastry destinations in the city.  Takashi WHO? Takashi Ochiai and his Patisseria Ochiai.
He was a pastry chef in Japan, but left for Europe to seek knowledge and experience, as is always the case.  His travels brought him to Belgium and London, where he worked for a few years and picked up French and English.  Chatting with him was great as we could communicate freely!
Eventually, he ended up in Spain, learning their traditional pastries and decided to set up shop in Barcelona in 1983.  Besides specializing in Japanese pastry, he is also an astute businessman and imports Japanese products for distribution (Yann Duytsche is one of his customers) as well as produces ice creams and chocolates for wholesale.
This place may not be as vogue and fashionable as Sadaharu Aoki, but I thoroughly enjoyed every morsel and second I was there.  Besides making my top 3 list of best pastry in Barcelona (There is no personal order of preference in that list!), Chef Ochiai is one of the nicest chefs I have ever met and he was so open with his knowledge and warm hearted that I might want to do a stage there if I can afford living expenses in Barcelona.
Thank you Chef Ochiai, for one of the more memorable pastry experiences in my life.  I will visit you again one day soon!

In Praise Of Sardines
They have two styles of hot chocolate, classic and dark, that they dispense from these brilliant machines (that are at the top of my wish list of most coveted kitchen objects).  You can't go wrong, as both of them are unbelievably rich, thick and positively orgasmic (I know, because I had a cup of each!), like dipping a ladle into the chocolate river of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  The hot chocolate is just one treat in a store full of goodies to satisfy the most discerning chocoholic (even pastry chef/author/blogger David Lebovitz thoroughly enjoyed one of Sampaka's many chocolate bars, or tabletas).  I stocked up on tabletas and boxes of Sampaka's collections, including "grandes origenes" (chocolate bombones divided according to source of the cocoa beans), "frutos scecos y crujientes" (bombones with nuts), "cacaos y especias de América" (bombones with spices, including curry, saffron, and ginger).

You Stylish Barcelona
Cacao Sampaka is a sleek and modern way to buy chocolate. They have things to cook chocolate with, chocolate spreads, fondues, sauces, tablets of chocolate and bon bons. They organize the types of chocolate into 8 categories: Single bean origins, Dried fruit and nuts, Cocoas and spices from the Americas, Herbs and Flowers, Liqueurs, Fruits and preserves, Truffles and lastly, Gastronomic innovations. The store is great because after you tantalize your taste buds staring at different types and different ways to consume chocolate, you can spend some time in their cafeteria where they offer many of the delights that are on sale in the store. They also have various liqueurs to pair with the type of chocolate that you are tasting. It makes chocolate shopping satisfactory in all the senses and I have never known myself to leave the store without a bit of a smile. Must be the liqueurs…

Frommer's
If there were such a thing as haut chocolat, this establishment would be its Christian Dior. Using the finest cacao available, a mind-boggling selection of confectionery is categorized into exotic collections. The sleek packaging turns the chocolates into true objects of desire, and there is a bar-cafe where you can enjoy a cup of creamy hot chocolate, pastries, and high-cholesterol sandwiches, at prices not dissimilar to more pedestrian places.

Secrets of Barcelona
Escriba has been creating confections in chocolate, as well as baking bread and cakes, for around a century. The Gran Via branch is where they do the baking, and you can enjoy a coffee while deliberating over which cake to order, or visit the confectionery showroom upstairs and learn a bit more about the history and the process.
But one of the main reasons why Escriba has become a Barcelona institution is the way in which chocolate is transformed into Art - for Valentine's day, for example, they displayed a spectacular exhibition of chocolate stiletto shoes in rainbow colours and an attention to detail that would make your Louboutins look decidedly "pasado de moda".

Nile Guide
Located within Casa Figueras, decorated by the famous architect Antoni Ros i Güell in 1902, this original spot was opened as a confectioner's in 1986. Since then, the queue of customers at the entrance has been remarkable, especially on Sundays and public holidays. Their most important creation is an homage to their location, called the Ramblas Cake. The café and the terrace were added in 1994. The owner is known as the 'chocolate wizard' due to his magnificent creations, which are all worth a try.

Frommer's
You may have already seen the glittering facade of this beautiful Art Nouveau shop on postcards. But far from a curious relic, it sells the products of one of the city's finest chocolate and cake makers. Pop in for a coffee and croissant (outside tables in the summer) or pick up a box of bonbons or a bottle of dessert wine to take home. At Easter, the windows display monas, elaborate chocolate sculptures decorated with jewels and feathers.

Eat That Yellow Snow
Their cakes and tarts were extremely beautiful and heartened by the potential deliciousness of these goodies, I sat down to order a selection of their best selling chocolates and their best selling cake, which was a chocolate layer cake.  Perhaps the staff thought I was a bit depressed and figured that chocolate therapy was my cure, so they proceeded to give me extremely sub-par service in a misguided attempt to make me order more.

Anyway, it only took one bite of the cake to turn 2 years of anticipation in one of bewilderment.  No, I was not blown away and left speechless because it was THAT GOOD, I was shocked and bewildered that it was THAT BAD.  This is the vanguard of Spanish Pastry, an institution that so many hold in such high esteem and yet, this did not stop them from making a chocolate cake that tasted like it came from a premix with a bit of real chocolate mixed in to mask the plastic taste.  Why it was like this, I will never know.
To drive me just a bit closer to depression, the chocolate pieces were not any better either.  The round truffle you see in the picture was cracked at the bottom, and the ganache within had shrunken so much that it was naturally water stable……..as it had so little of it left for bacteriological activity!
Everything was so disappointing that I did not even bother to take notes of it.  In conclusion, the less said of this place, the better, as the only good thing I can say about them is that their packaging is cool.  If you are a chef or foodie searching for a good pastry shop in Barcelona, go to Oriol Balaguer, Pasteleria Hoffmann (Go Cristina!), Natcha or Takashi Ochiai.
Harsh words perhaps, but this is a lesson that goes to show that one should not believe all the hype and flash surrounding a place.  At the end of the day, if it tastes crap, the taste and memory will linger on.

In Praise of Sardines
Everything at Escribà is as delicious as it looks, which is impressive when you see how gorgeous the chocolates are.  Besides the meltingly smooth chocolate creations and a fun collection of candy glam rings, come here for the lovely (and, again, absolutely stunning) pastries.  Christian Escribà is famous for his wedding and birthday cake creations, made to the specifications of his discerning and creative customers.

El Quim de la Boqueria is truly a family business: mom, dad and son serve traditional catalan dishes around the bar when there is space. Even the regulars have to wait for a place to sit, as El Quim is a stall in the most beautiful and bustling market in Barcelona: the Boqueria market.
Boquerones, chipirones, arroz negro.. From 3€ to 9€... Best tapas around.. If there is no table for you, go to Pinotxo another tapas bar in the same Boqueria market.

For a proper sit-down breakfast or lunch look no further than the chef’s favourite, El Quim de la Boqueria. He boasts more than 50 regular dishes (a number set to increase now that his 19-year-old son has joined the ranks behind the stoves), all of it honest-to-goodness scran. Describing himself and his team as "defenders of the egg", try his huevos estrellados con chipirones (broken eggs with baby squid) or his signature dish: five different kinds of mushrooms cooked with confit onions and port and topped with a fried egg and a caramelised slab of duck liver. It all goes perfectly with a crisp, cool glass of cava.  (June 15, 2012)

Barcelona Life
The Boqueria market is one of Barcelona's must see sights, selling the top quality local fruit, veg. and seafood that will grace the tables of the city's best restaurants later that night. So where better than La Boqueria to go for lunch, where you can combine taking macabre photos of sheep heads and still wriggling eels and lobsters, with tasting the best ingredients in Spain at their freshest. That's exactly the draw of El Quim's kiosk restaurant in the heart of the market. Pull up a stool and let the eponymous Quim rustle up trademark dishes such as cigrons amb cloïsses (Catalan for chickpeas with clams) and xipirons amb mongetes de Santa Pau (baby squid with white beans). It's not the cheapest place in town but for fresh Catalan cuisine and tapas you can't go far wrong. Check our guide to dining out in Barcelona for more restaurant options.

Smack bang in the middle of the bustling Boqueria market, lies this small tapas bar. A favorite among the locals, it is known for its fabulous Catalonian breakfast offerings. So grab one of the 18 seats available and enjoy your drink and Chef Quim Márquez Durán's delicious offerings.

Here you can have breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Smart Schedule (from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 to 24:30 hrs and Sundays from 10 to 16:00 hrs. Closed on Mondays). This minimalist spot, run by an Australian and an Englishwoman is described as a gastropub. You can find delicious, original recipes, with British, Italian or Catalan influences, but always extremely original results. Good breakfasts, sweet and savoury items and imaginative dishes like the American-style rabbit fried in breadcrumbs. The home-made desserts are excellent.

Depending on your appetite, we would recommend: sandwiches, salads or delicious dishes like the tuna steack and lentil , risotto with confit tomatoes, homemade burger. All desserts are unforgettable (mascarpone pudding, cheese cake, crumbles…) The menu changes often, the occasion to discover other good surprises.

London’s loss is Barcelona’s gain. Among the pioneers of the British capital’s gastropub movement with Easton and The Princess of Shoreditch, Aussie chef Zim Sutton has opened up shop in Raval, with the help of his wife Poppy.
Located in the trendy Doctor Dou area, by far the safest and most gentrified part of the neighbourhood, Caravelle is a great brunch spot though equally apt for a hearty breakfast, a leisurely lunch or a succulent evening meal. Open throughout the day Tuesday through Sunday, the place serves up a creative menu that is changed daily and across mealtimes.
The kitchen is Mediterranean-based – they invariably follow the local and market fresh philosophy so favoured these days – but leaves its own unique signature with accents and dashes of Australia and London, like the fact that more space is given to aperitifs than desserts on the menu. Nibble at seafood, rices and salads, or tuck into the homemade sausages, pulled pork sandwiches, crumbles and puddings.
While the décor is as pared back and minimalist as the food is rich and colourful (let’s say it’s more Soviet spartan than Nordic cool), it’s a cosy and laid-back hangout. Fairly sleepy during the week, it fills up with a mix of 20 and 30-something locals and visitors evenings and on the weekend; arrive before 1pm or expect a wait for brunch.

Caravelle (www.facebook.com/CaravelleBCN) is a new venture by Australian chef Zim Sutton and his wife Poppy Da Costa who ran a gastro pub in London before moving here a few months ago. If the space doesn't quite capture the cosy, lived-in spirit of your classic British pub – the minimal décor is more Copenhagen than Camden - the food is bang-on: solid, unpretentious yet interesting platefuls of daily changing specials like succulent homemade pork and fennel sausages on beans, hearty beetroot and lentil salads with feta and a top-notch panko-Parmesan crusted rabbit with corn. Sunday brunch meanwhile has become a must for the cool kids in town. Main courses from €8.50.

In the popular Boqueria market we find the Pinotxo bar, a landmark place that has occupied stalls 66 and 67 for over 50 years. It opens around 6 in the morning and since that time it works literally non-stop until the market shuts at 5pm.
Juanito is the soul of such a special place and, with his improvisation skills and friendliness, surprises his guests (those who are lucky enough to find a little space at the bar) with his fresh simple dishes elaborated with dedication and imagination. His wonderful seasonal cuisine presents creations like tripes, "cap i pota", chickpea stew and much more that changes on a daily basis depending on the best products available in the market.
Pinotxo has a great many of followers that know what getting one of the stools at the bar means. A must when visiting La Boqueria.

No lie, when we go to eat at the Boqueria Mercat (market in Catalan) it’s always difficult for us to choose between El Quim de la Boqueria and this other tapas bar called Pinotxo.. Go to both and tell us what is your favourite..
At Pinotxo (located to the right of the main entrance) you will appreciate for sure: lamb stew, lentils, vegetable stew, cod, grilled lobster, clams and many kind of rice.. Difficult to choose..

Time Out  Thu Dec 27 2012
Just inside the entrance of the Boqueria, on the right-hand side, is this essential market bar. It's run by Juanito, one of the city's best-loved figures. In the early morning the place is popular with ravenous night owls on their way home and, at lunchtime, foodies in the know. Various tapas are available, along with excellent daily specials such as tuna casserole or scrambled eggs with clams.

Unlike
Amidst the raging colors and charming sounds of La Boqueria, you may mistake Pinotxo Bar to be cute, obviously good but just one of the many lunch options that the market has to offer. But however much it benefits from the atmosphere of La Boqueria, it is safe to say that this 15m2 corner holds the power to create that vivacious atmosphere entirely on its own. Since its opening in 1952, the family run Catalan bar thrives with the energy and spirit of Juan Bayen, the host, head chef and bartender; and flourishes with the contributions of Jordi, Didac, Albert and Javi. The food, prepared in front of you, and devoured right next to you, dares you to choose one over the other. Fresh seafood and saucy, spicy meat plates combined with chickpeas or beans are traditional for Catalan cuisine, but the meals here are in no way typical or expected. Pinotxo bar is a legend and a reason on its own to visit Barcelona.

Nile Guide
This unique spot has been open for more than 50 years and acts as a magnet for all sorts of locals—shop assistants, pedestrians on the Ramblas, business executives, civil servants and politicians all wait patiently for their turn at the bar. There is no menu and the owners—Juanito and his family—simply announce what is on offer and take an order. These are just a few of the specials you might get to try—Artichoke Omelette, Stew, Grilled Norway Lobsters, Lentils, a wide array of rice dishes and clams à la Marinera. The restaurant even has its own cava (Spanish sparkling wine), called "Pinotxo."

Cuines Santa Caterina restaurant is located inside the Santa Caterina market, in Barcelona's district of El Born.
Grupo Tragaluz is in charge of this roomy and bright space that had to offer season cuisine by definition. The trees and wood in the decor make it a kind of organic and cosy place.
The original menu of Cuines Santa Caterina offers a mix of Mediterranean, vegetarian and Oriental dishes based on rice dishes, sushi and makis, pasta, traditional and creative dishes and excellent dishes of the day.
At the bar we can have breakfast or some tapas at any time of the day. There is food to take away. A more than wise choice for those who are looking for good season food at really affordable prices.

Barcelona.com
Cuines Santa Caterina is located in the brand new Santa Caterina's market - renovated by top architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue of EMBT - in El Born district. Cuines means kitchens in Catalan. Cuines with a S because this restaurant offers 4 different types of kitchens: Asian, Mediterranean, Italian and vegetarian…
Fusion food starts to be one of Barcelona’s restaurants trademarks since one year or two. At Cuines Santa-Catarina we are pleased to tell you that the bet is successful. No surprise Cuines is part of Tragaluz Group known for others refined places like: Omm hotel, Bestial, Negro, Tragaluz, Agua... We like very much the beautiful decoration which reminded Scandinavian interior design by its simplicity of the materials made of wood, stone, Ficus trees planted in between tables, columns of light and an entire wall composed of shelves stacked with stocks of wine, olive oil, vinegars, flours...
As we said food is very imaginative and of course coming directly from the market. Why not mix a bit of everything? Try delicious vegetarian salads like one with melted cheese, nuts and dates (6€), green asparagus perfectly grilled at la plancha with spicy Romesco sauce (7€), assortment of antipasto (11€). Then have perfect risotto like the one with langoustines (10€), suquet de rap (10€), gambas with garlic (12€) or head Japan and take not the best one but very fresh sushi and maki (from 10 to 20€).
At these prices you understand that Cuines Santa-Caterina became rapidly the hottest place in town appreciated by local’s business man as well as by well informed tourists ;-) The restaurant is non smoker but you can have tapas at the entrance bar where smoking is allowed and tapas very good!!. Perfect place at noon. Go there at 1pm because at 2pm it’s full.

Frommers
This spacious spot adjoining the Santa Caterina market couldn't be better located for fresh local produce, with samples displayed enticingly along the large front windows. Designed by top architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, the CSC -- as it's popularly known -- features an open kitchen, subtle back lighting, and ficus trees planted in between the long olive-wood tables. Lunch is particularly good value and the place is noisily packed as locals call out their choices from the chalkboard menu. Fusion, vegetarian, and down-to-earth dishes range from fresh sushi and green asparagus to baked potato with cheese and sausage. There's also a tapas bar with a fresh-juice section.

Fodor's
A lovingly restored market designed by the late Enric Miralles and completed by his widow Benedetta Tagliabue provides a spectacular setting for one of the city's most original dining operations. Under the undulating wooden superstructure of the market, the breakfast and tapas bar, open from dawn to midnight, offers a variety of culinary specialties cross-referenced by different cuisines (Mediterranean, Asian, vegetarian) and products (pasta, rice, fish, meat), all served on sleek counters and long wooden tables.

Spotted by locals
How fresh can food be? In this restaurant, you will be seated literally inside the market -but in a kind of poshy style. According to their own words, they buy most of their produce under the same colorful roof. What is definitely true is that they have a good kitchen and a funny way to present it. Instead of a large regular menu, you’ll be given a grid according to the different open kitchens that you are able to see inside the restaurant.
It’s a quite busy place and no reservations are taken. But if you have the time to wait it is an interesting experience – they don’t usually serve firsts and seconds but you get your food on the table according to the amount of time it takes to prepare: Salad and sushi are quick, rice takes 20 minutes at least.
At the entrance they have a nice bar area where you can have tapas and also coffee. The feeling can sometimes be that everything is just going too fast, but the food is quite good and they have a good wine selection. They also have a nice open terrace for smokers, with warmers outside during winter time – now with sun coming back, is the perfect spot at midday.
My favorites dishes: grilled provolone, tuna tartar and the freshly pressed juices. For dessert, Mascarpone Maki. Ask for the “plate of the day”: they can be seen in the running lamps over the kitchen – usually large and extra fresh things.

With a French name and a New York style look, Joséphine is a charming spot boasting a cosmopolitan and chic atmosphere and a very personal decoration located one block away from the emblematic Passeig de Gràcia.
Opened in December 2010 by fashion designer Catherine Guerra, this cosy bar and restaurant draws the attention from the street with a cute facade decorated with dozens of small flowerpots. Once inside, we find a very special space with a vintage touch decorated by renowned interior designer Lázaro Rosa Violán, with a marble bar, a stunning cabinet full of bottles, leather seats, large mirrors and lamps and warm lighting.
Joséphine serves breakfast in the morning, tapas between meals, lunch menu and dinner. Made with quality products, the Mediterranean-inspired menu is ideal for casual dining.
Besides, after dinner the space surrends to the charms of the night with great cocktails made with fresh fruit and a select premium gin list. On Thursday and Friday night there are live jazz and soul sessions, the finishing touch to a perfect night!

Joséphine's restaurant is part of Mediterranean cuisine, with more or less elaborate options always based on quality products made using two different styles, depending on what appeals to everyone.
On the one hand, you can opt for a mix of three tasting portions and, for another hand, a more robust dish. All at affordable price, making it an ideal place for an improvised meal, friends or couples.
The inside design is one of its highlights: urban, modern and cosmopolitan, reminded me of the Lower East Side New York, though in small size. It appeals for its mix between old, vintage bar, the lamps and chairs at the entrance, and up-to-date, for its atmosphere and culinary offerings and a terrace of the same style.
A very nice and cosy place not to miss!

Secret of Barcelona
If you like something urban and chic, stop at Josephine.
Josephine is a nice little bar & restaurant, which was opened quite recently. The place is impossible to pass unnoticed, as you will realise when you see its interesting décor - there are flower pots hanging around large windows and the place breathes an air of chic New York style. The interior is modern and cosmopolitan, it reminds us of the Lower East Side in New York or Paris. Personally, we got seduced by the smart combination of the new and old; the place has vintage lamps and antique furniture, yet the atmosphere feels fresh and new. Needless to say, the food is delicious.
As their logo goes, Josephine is a Café-Comptoir-Deli-Bar, meaning here you can sit down for a chat while enjoying your coffee along with breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. You can also just come and have an afternoon drink or take some delicatessen goodies back home with you. The atmosphere is pleasant, with its soothing background music by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, among others.
Try their breakfast menus or just a simple coffee with milk and their classic croissants, we loved it.

Spotted by Locals
Joséphine has quickly become one of my favourite lunchtime places to meet up with friends for a tasty, economical menú del día. When Joséphine first opened we thought it was a florists. You can see why from the above photo. It describes itself as a café-comptoir-deli-bar. The place exudes an authentic French vibe with elegant décor and, appropriately, is situated not very far from the Passatge dels Camps Elisis.
Interestingly, your three lunch dishes all arrive on the same big plate. (Must save them a fair bit of washing-up!). The lunch menu comprises three dishes (served on the same plate) with bread, water and a large glass of wine and a dessert. Good food. And, if you don’t fancy a lunch special then can always order a croque monsieur or other single snack item.
It is a very popular lunch spot for local office workers and does get very busy, so expect a bit of a wait for a table. You may be able to find a space at the bar while you wait for a table. It’s worth the wait. The food is quite expensive in the evening but it’s a good place to chill and chat with a cocktail. It’s just a short stroll off the Passeig de Gràcia.

Near the Paseo de Gracia of Barcelona, in the left Eixample district there is the restaurant Joséphine, a place undoubtedly original in which you can find recipes of Mediterranean cuisine and tapas. From its entrance filled with potted plants and the decorative glass door to the retro 20's decor, the restaurant Joséphine will make you feel in a vintage New York bar.

Beautifully designed, Josephine is a quaint and understated restaurant with a rustic elegance. Featuring an extensive brunch, lunch as well as dinner menu, it has a wide variety of traditional food as well an extensive wine and alcohol selection. Perfect for dates or intimate dinners, it's romantic yet not over the top and reasonably priced. Situated at the edge of the Eixample district, you're close to both the Born and a quick walk to Gracia, both excellent neighborhoods to spend the evening once you're finished dining.

For some this little Barcelona corner joint has taken the best from its French-American-Spanish genes. Located just off Passeig de Gracia, the city’s prime shopping street, there’s jazzy tunes, moody lighting and a relaxed bistro atmosphere on offer at Josephine.
Others may take greater note of the invariably spotty service and forgettable cuisine, but there’s little wrong with the casual vibe, drawing in an attractive crowd. Wooden tables and leather sofas hint at NYC, with floating lanterns and vintage lamps adding a casual, slightly haphazard edge compared to the big, solid bar with its glass cabinets of alcoholic curiosities.
Weekend brunch is prime time, but the set weekday lunch menu is good value at around 12 euros, with snacks like croque monsieurs available if you’re looking for a light bite. Its deli style counter has a good selection of cheeses, sandwiches and cakes for a perfect afternoon pitstop.
