Hotel España is one of the most emblematic hotels in Barcelona for its history, architecture, decoration and location. Originally opened in 1859 and later decorated by Domènech i Montaner, this gem of Catalan modernism reopened in the late 2010 after 14 months of renovation.
The restoration has been respectful and loyal to the work that the famous Catalan architect did at beginning of the 20th century and, consequently, the hotel now combines a modern interior design with the classicism and charm of the past. The also refurbishes Fonda España, the hotel’s restaurant, now has chef Martin Berasategui as gastronomic consultant. The award-winning cook has retrieved the old concept of Catalan ‘fondas’ and offers updated traditional cuisine based on the best market produce, with simple elaborations and original presentations.
The restaurant is located in a dining room to the right of the reception, and welcomes us in a classic atmosphere in which the glazed tiles and antique wooden hangers remind us of the historical significance of the setting.
Barcelona Metropolitan
Rich, filling, Catalan comfort food in a pretty and historic dining room—not much to argue with there. I think they’re doing themselves a disservice touting the whole ‘Martín Berasategui at the helm’ thing, though, because anyone who’s eaten at his mothership and is hoping for a low-cost version of that triple-starred magic is going to be disappointed—this is a completely different kind of food. Honest, traditional, handed-down-recipe food. Loved the lamb and fried mongetes, and the mackerel with trinxat hit the spot on this chilly day.
