The passion for fish and the coolest and most elegant New York style atmosphere have culminated in the creation of Big Fish, a restaurant born out of a long family tradition that began in the Galvany market, in uptown Barcelona, with a stall that, after four generations, still offers the freshest fish.
Joan and Gemma, the current owners of the business –who already have a restaurant near the market-, opened in February 2009 a restaurant at the heart of El Born where they prove, day after day, their respect for the products they deal with.
The restaurant turns out to be a special place, a stylish and modern space, where the white walls live in perfect harmony with the wooden tables and the leather sofas. The mirrors and huge windows facing El Born market help to create a really nice atmosphere, perfect for a lunch, dinner and even a drink, since on weekends the place works as a bar until 3am.
The offer at Big Fish is based strictly on wild fish and it is cooked in different ways (oven-baked, grilled, steamed...), including the Japanese version. In fact, sushi is prepared in front of the guests and is served all day long.
Big Fish joins the offer of the most cosmopolitan district in Barcelona as a new gastronomic phenomenon to which we predict a promising future.

Fodors
Hidden away behind the immense steel hangar of the Born market, this ample, handsomely designed and decorated space has an intimate feel and an old world, semi-colonial air with a slight swashbuckle. Fish and seafood, not surprisingly, dominate the menu here, with some Japanese touches in the preparations. Owners Joan Soler and Gemma Madir also have a fish market in the upscale Galvany market in Sant Gervasi. The uptown branch of Big Fish at Carrer Amigó 39 is equally recomendable.

Frommer's
This spacious, high-ceilinged addition to the Born's array of chic eating spots is one of the best new seafood restaurants in town. It was designed by Lazaro Rosa Violán, who created the Market Hotel. The decor is offbeat, with small tables, polished wood floorboards, and bright white walls and pillars. The food is supreme: An inventive blend of Mediterranean and Atlantic catches with Japanese minimalism. Outstanding are the veieras gallegas a la plancha (Galician scallops cooked on a hotplate), gambas de Palamós (prawns from Palamós), and lubina a la brasa con mermelada de tomates y esparragos (charcoal-grilled sea bass with tomato and asparagus jam). For dessert try the white chocolate brownie or bite into a dainty Tokyo-style kudamono fruit dish. There's a non-stop sushi bar and cocktail area that stays open until 3am.

60 x 80
At a first glance, Big Fish looks like yet another formula-driven place – a formula that includes a delightful interior by Lazaro Rosa-Violán, sushi and, sure enough, cocktails – but, as the name allures to, the fish is what really sets it apart. Would you expect anything less from an owner who’s a professional fishmonger? The brainchild of Joan Soler, who already combines the selling of fish with the sampling of fishy dishes at his shop across from Mercat Galvany in Sant Gervasi, it’s cocktails and sushi, alright, but also more traditional dishes with the focus firmly set on the quality of the raw materials.

Secrets of Barcelona
One of the surprises when walking through Born is to discover truly authentic wonders as Big Fish. Being the first design fish shop in Barcelona, the concept is something fresh and new; here you can buy fish, listen to jazz music and drink a glass of wine while the sushi man is making sushi to take away.
In charge of Big Fish is a family with a great passion for fish. All that expertise to the restaurant has made it one of the best in Barcelona when it comes to quality taste of fresh fish (not to mention the lovely décor, designed by the talented Lazaro Rosa-Violán). Cooked with Mediterranean recipes, you can request an incredible steamed hake, prawns from Palamos or grilled sea bass as you relax on the Chester sofas presiding over the beautiful dining room.
* The place is not very big, so we recommend you to book a table if you don't want to wait way too long.
